At BENT & BREE, we are extremely selective about the materials we use because we believe creating a quality handbag starts with choosing exceptional materials.
Where Does Cork Come From?
Cork comes from the bark of the cork oak tree, Quercus suber, which grows throughout the Mediterranean region. Portugal stands out for its cork oak forests and centuries old tradition of cork production. Its warm, dry summers and mild, wetter winters provide ideal conditions for cork oak trees to thrive.
One of the most remarkable things about cork is that harvesting it does not require cutting down the tree. Skilled harvesters carefully remove the outer bark while the tree remains standing, allowing the cork oak to naturally regenerate its bark over time.
But harvesting cork is not as simple as removing bark from a tree. It is a specialized skill requiring experience, precision, and a thorough understanding of the tree. Skilled harvesters know how to remove the cork while protecting the living layers underneath and preserving the health of the tree.
Generations of harvesters have passed this traditional skill down through their families. Today, highly experienced workers continue to perform much of the harvesting, while fewer younger people choose to enter this physically demanding profession. The knowledge and expertise of these harvesters are an important part of the value of Portuguese cork.
Not All Cork Fabric Is Created Equal
This is one of the most important things to understand when shopping for a cork handbag: Not all cork fabric is the same. The word “cork” doesn’t tell you the quality of the material.
There are different grades and qualities of cork, and the differences can affect the appearance, texture, flexibility, strength, and performance of the finished fabric.
At BENT & BREE, we don’t simply use any cork that is available to us. We carefully select only approximately 1% of the cork harvested for use in our handbags and accessories. We look for cork fabric with a beautiful natural grain, a smooth and refined texture, flexibility, strength, durability, consistency, and a finish that meets our standards.
Portugal’s long history with cork means there is an established industry and generations of knowledge surrounding its harvesting and processing. However, high-quality Portuguese cork also comes at a premium. Other countries, including China, also produce and process cork, often at lower production costs.
This doesn’t mean that every cork product made outside Portugal is low quality. However, two handbags can both be called “cork handbags” while using very different materials, craftsmanship, and manufacturing standards.
When comparing cork handbags, look beyond the price. Consider where the cork comes from, its grade and quality, how manufacturers process it, and the craftsmanship that goes into the finished handbag.
From Cork Bark to a Cork Handbag
Cork does not arrive from the forest ready to become a handbag.
After harvesting, workers leave the raw cork planks outdoors in the Montado, Portugal’s cork oak forest, where they naturally season under the elements for approximately six months. This traditional resting period helps prepare the cork for the next stage of production.
After the cork seasons, skilled manufacturers carefully sort and process the planks. They transform the cork into thin layers and combine them with a suitable backing material to create the flexible cork fabric used for handbags, accessories, footwear, furniture, and other products.
The quality of the original cork plays a critical role in the quality of the finished fabric. Artisans and manufacturers can then cut, stitch, shape, emboss, print, and finish the fabric according to each design.
These careful steps transform a natural material from the cork oak forest into a sophisticated, versatile material for fashion and design.

Why Quality Cork Handbags Cost More
“Why does a BENT & BREE handbag cost more than another handbag?”
The answer starts with the cork itself. Cork harvesting requires highly specialized skills. Experienced harvesters carefully remove the cork oak’s bark while protecting the tree and its living layers. It is a traditional profession that requires years of knowledge and experience to do properly.
As the industry changes, this specialized work is also becoming more difficult to staff. Experienced, mature workers still handle much of the harvesting, while fewer younger people choose to enter this physically demanding profession. That expertise is an important part of the value of Portuguese cork.
When comparing cork handbags, it can be tempting to compare only the appearance or the price. But two handbags can both carry the label “cork handbag” while using very different materials and following very different manufacturing standards.
Only high quality Portuguese cork is used for our handbags. This premium material often costs more than cork produced in other countries, including China. And because we select only approximately 1% of the harvested cork for our handbags and accessories, we are intentionally choosing a much smaller and more carefully selected portion of the available material.
The material is only the beginning. A quality handbag also requires thoughtful design, pattern development, skilled manufacturing, quality hardware, lining, careful finishing, quality control, and independent testing.
That’s why two handbags labeled “cork handbags” may differ significantly in cork quality, craftsmanship, and overall construction. BENT & BREE, our focus is on the quality of the cork, its origin, the construction of the handbag, and the standards we require for our finished products. We don’t believe the least expensive product is necessarily the right choice, nor do we believe a higher price automatically means higher quality. We believe consumers deserve to understand what goes into the product they are purchasing.

We Don’t Just Talk About Quality—We Test It
We wanted to do more than simply tell our customers that our cork fabric and handbags are durable and well made. We wanted to test them.
BENT & BREE had our cork fabric and finished handbag independently tested at a laboratory in Buffalo, New York. The testing evaluated characteristics including color fastness, abrasion resistance, tensile strength, and water resistance, among other performance considerations. Independent testing gives us another level of confidence in the materials and construction we use.
And because BENT & BREE carries the names of our children, quality is deeply personal to us. We want every handbag that carries their names to reflect the care, craftsmanship, and standards we believe in.
